While there are a lot of iPods and iPhone models out there I will try to show you the `classic` method of doing this which means that you don`t need a software in order to transfer your files. At the end of this answer, I will also try to recommend you a software which will allow you to transfer all kind of files such as songs, pictures etc. from your iPod, back to your PC.
A: Please connect your iPod to your computer. As soon as you will connect your iPod to your PC, you will notice that iTunes starts syncing your music without any warning so please stop it by using the `X` located in the right hand corner of iTunes ( look up ). Once that iTunes is stopped proceed to step B.
B: Go to Control Panel -> select Portable Media Devices and from there open your iPod.
C: Go to Tools menu -> Options and there in the `View Tab`, make sure that option `Show hidden files and folders` is being checked ( enabled ).
D: Now you need to navigate to the music folder. Depending on your iPod generation, the full path is in Portable Media Devices TOM IPOD (F:)iPod_ControlMusic ( this is how it shows me, please note that I am using a second generation iPod and also that the drive letter is F: so you might find a different location and also a different drive letter name such as G: or anything else).
E: Take a good look and make sure to select all music folders and once that you`re completely sure that you have identified all of them, `drag and drop them` on a folder located on your hard drive or at your choice, directly into iTunes ( for me it`s better to store them on a folder, on my hard drive ).
This is it. That`s the `classic` method that I know whenever you want to transfer files from an iPod to a PC. Probably some of you will find this method a little `complicated` or maybe you`re just looking for a software that will do the job. Fortunately, there is a tiny application called Pod to PC that will help you to do this, it`s not free anymore, I mean it doesn`t expire and the limitation is that you can transfer only 10 songs at a time. If you`re willing to spend a couple of dollars on a licence you can buy the full version wich allows you to transfer your files without any restrictions. If you need to test this software you can download Pod to PC.
