What security software should I use for Windows

There are a lot of questions coming in my e-mail, from different people asking me different things about antiviruses, firewalls and anti-spyware products. The bad news is that there is no such thing as a perfect program that contains all of these security features. The good news is that you can actually obtain a decent level of security if you know how to combine several programs.

There are a lot of things to say about security, there are a lot of books that talks only about antiviruses, firewalls or anti-spyware products. However, the purpose of this article is to provide the shortest answer to this question.

Firewalls

For better protection I strongly recommend you to use a router to your Internet connection. It`s extremely cheap these days. The router will act as a firewall and it should keep your computer safe from a lot of network-based threats. I don`t have to say that your Windows firewall must be activated all the time unless you`re using another firewall and you really know how to use it.

Antiviruses

I can`t even imagine a Windows user without an antivirus these days. So I have two recommendations: Avira Free Antivirus and AVG Free. If you don`t have the money for a shareware antivirus, a free antivirus should be installed on your computer. If you want to spend some money for a good antivirus I would recommend you of the Avira Premium, Kaspersky Antivirus or Dr Web Antivirus.

Avira Free Antivirus - it does offer a decent level of protection, it doesn`t take a lot of computer resources but as far as I know it doesn`t offer spyware protection and that`s available only for the paid version.

AVG Free - this antivirus comes with a feature called "LinkScanner" which is quite annoying. I`m saying this because it attempts to check every link off any website you visit for malware and phishing. It`s going to affect your browser performance so I would recommend you to disable the feature.

I am not going to talk about the shareware antiviruses, Kaspersky, Avira or Dr. Web, both of them represents a good choice so it`s up to you before you purchase one of these versions, just read more on the Internet about them.

Anti-spyware

There isn`t much to say about anti-spyware products and I`m saying this because there are too many anti-spyware products out there to be trusted. So I`m going to recommend only two of them.

Spybot Search and Destroy is in my opinion the best and one of the oldest anti-spyware products. In order to be effective you need to update this software once a week and run a full scan. That`s everything you need to do and you should be safe.

Ad-Aware is also a well-known software being among the oldest in this category. I mentioned this software because I use it in the past and it worth to be mentioned.

Is there anything else I should know?

As I said there is no such product that will guarantee you the perfect safety. I know it`s a little off-topic but be aware that the best protection on a long term is the backup of your data. If you want to protect your data, make them a safety backup, on a DVD, store them on an external device, use a backup software such as Acronis TrueImage but make sure that you backup everything you need. I usually store important information in 2 places just to make sure that I won`t loose it. If it`s extremely important save it in 3 places. After all, the security depends on how well you understand and apply this information ( from here and other resources ).
